THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE A LETTER I GOT FROM MYSPACE - I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT A WHITE GIRL FROM ATL AND A BROWN BOY FROM LOS ANGELES ARE ON THE SAME PAGE - IT MAKES ALL THE WORK I HAVE DONE WORTH WHILE WHEN I GET A LETTER LIKE THIS -- THANKS HEATHER
Hi - I discovered your music when Logo started airing Pick Up the Mic and was truly touched. You are fighting on the front lines of hate and you are making a difference!! I am 41 and live in Atlanta. I sometimes feel ostracized in the lesbian community because I am femme. I feel like I'm not taken seriously when I ask someone out or flirt with a woman because I don't look like a 'lesbian'. It's really frustrating and hurtful. I love you because you represent a different side of 'gay', but I have a feeling you are taken seriously:) The impact of what you are doing is amazing. I wish there were role models like you when I was growing up. I am trying to tell people about what you do. I make people listen. When I talk about you I get laughed at and told, "yeah right, you Heather (silly white girl), are into gay hip hop! whatever! That's the most ridiculous thing ever. It's just some stupid trend." They laugh at the concept of gay hip hop. I stop them and say, "Why is it stupid, because of what it represents? Because you have NO concept of what it represents? Because you don't understand what it is like to be afraid of who you are, feel inferior because of who you like, feel uncomfortable and leave a conversation when the women around you are talking about birth control and ask you what you take, feel out of place when men hit on you and you turn them down, overhear conversations that are negative about gay people, listen to friends discuss how every aspect of their straight couple life is celebrated in society, and on and on and on! My anger boils - you are my voice and I'm glad it's loud!! Take care! Sincerely, Heather
